4 Qīxì jié 七夕节 Qi Xi Festival In the period July 28 to August 28

The Qixi Festival is based on a love story about two people who can only see each other once a year. This is why the festival is celebrated.

Niú láng 牛郎 an oxherd, married Zhīnǚ织女 the weaver girl who was a fairy, with the help of his ox, which was a dethroned cattle god.

Zhīnǚ织女 went back to heaven with his goddess mother. The goddess put a river of stars (the Milky Way) between them, but magpies were allowed to build a bridge once a year to meet on Qīxì 七夕, the seventh day of the seventh month in Chinese the lunar calendar.

Because the date is based on the Chinese lunar calendar, it comes about 21 to 51 days after the Gregorian date, which is in the period between July 28 and August 28.

The upcoming dates for the Qīxì jié 七夕节 are August 4 (2022), August 22 (2023), August 10 (2024) etc.

Like on Valentine’s Day, you can expect to get gifts or go for a meal with your companion.

Yuánxiāo jié 元宵节 Lantern Festival takes place on the 15th day of the first month in the Lunar Calendar. Some Chinese people think of this old traditional festival as the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day.

In ancient China, it was common for men and women to go out on dates and find partners by going out to light the lanterns.

Mandarin Chinese is simpler to learn than you would imagine. While Chinese has unique features that might be regarded as difficult in some way, there are also many factors that make learning Chinese easy.

1  Pinyin: Using the Latin Alphabet while learning Chinese!

Pinyin is the standard way to turn Chinese characters into romanized words. It is a massive help for people learning Chinese. In this digital age, one great thing about pinyin is that you can type it into your computer, and it will suggest characters. This means you can text or email in Chinese without learning the strokes of each character. Practicing to type Chinese is an effective way of improving your Chinese.

2  The construction of Chinese words is logical

Words, i.e., characters put together, contain much more meaning than characters. They are created in a way that is often obvious or at least understandable to a student.

People often think that learning Chinese means memorizing three to four thousand characters that have nothing to do with each other. This makes the language seem impossible to understand. This viewpoint is not accurate at all. Learning one character gives you access to a world of other characters that make sense together.

For example, if you know the Chinese character for electricity, diàn 电, you will immediately have easier access to a large variety of words:

1. diàn huà 电话   phone

diàn  electric

huà   speech, what is spoken

2. diàn nǎo 电脑 – PC, computer

diàn  electric

nǎo 脑  brain

Another example is the word for Monday is xīng qi yī 星期一, where xīng qi 星期 is week and yī 一. So you end up with “week one”. Tuesday in Chinese is xīng qi èr 星期二, where xīng qi 星期 is week, and èr 二 is two, week two, etc. It is logical as it follows the order of the days in the week.

For months you use the number one to twelve plus yuè 月. For example, if you put yī 一 one and yuè 月 month together,  you get yī yuè 一月 January. For February it is èr 二 or two and then yuè 月 month.

3  Perceived difficulty turns out to be an advantage!

In a way, the fact that many consider the Chinese language hard to learn is an advantage. When Chinese people find out you are trying to learn their language, they are almost always eager to help you. Compare this to a foreigner not trying to learn Chinese.

Do also remember that people in China are very proud of their long-lasting culture and unique language. The extra step you have taken compared to many foreigners is your advantage when you are in China.

4  You do not necessarily have to use plurals for Chinese nouns

When you learn one Chinese noun, you should learn that nouns can be used singular or plural. There are ways to emphasize plurality, but this is not something you will need to do when using Chinese nouns.

5  The Chinese nouns do not have grammatical genders

In contrast to Latin languages, nouns do not have grammatical genders. You don’t have to learn if a car is male or female.

In many languages, grammatical gender is a crucial consideration also think that genders and the rules that accompany grammatical gender are challenging.

Chinese words also don’t change based on what they are used for. 10 Reasons Why Learning Mandarin Chinese Is Easier Than You Might ThinkChinese words are written the same way, whether the subject or the object of a clause. Most of the time, a word’s role in a sentence looks the same.

6  Chinese doesn’t have words with a lot of syllables

English will have words that are very long and made up of a lot of smaller parts. This is not how the Chinese language is. Most words in Chinese have only one or two. So, most Chinese words only have one or two syllables.

7  There’s no need for articles like ‘a,’ ‘an’, ‘the’, ‘das’, ‘der’ , ‘die’ etc.

In Chinese, there are no words for articles like this.

8  In Mandarin Chinese, there are no tenses.

Chinese verbs do not change forms or conjugate. For example:

Tāmen shì 他们是  They are

Tā shì 他是  He is

Wǒ shì 我是  am

Learning Mandarin grammar is relatively simple when it comes to verb conjugation. Chinese doesn’t make the same distinctions between yesterday, today, and tomorrow as a language as English does. Most of the time, instead of altering the sentence’s structure, it is conveyed by a word expressing when something occurs or the activity is finished. Students that learn Chinese Mandarin find that the verbs themselves don’t take on a different form depending on when something happens.

9  Chinese words make sense and are easy to understand

If you know Greek or Latin, you might be able to see the roots of words in European languages. But if you look at a random sentence, you can’t expect to understand how each word is put together. In Chinese, you actually can do that. This has some significant advantages.

Let’s look at one advanced vocabulary that is easy to learn in Chinese but hard in English. For example, ‘meralgia paresthetica’. This Meralgia paresthetica is a disorder characterized by tingling, numbness, and burning pain in the outer side of the thigh. 1

The Chinese word for this is straightforward, gǎnjué yìcháng xìng gǔtòng 感觉异常股痛: A: gǎnjué 感觉 to feel B: yìcháng xìng 异常性 abnormal C: gǔ tòng 股痛 pain in the thigh. If you didn’t know what this word meant after reading it in its original name, it was probably easier after reading the literal translation of the Chinese words.

10 Few words are needed to get by in Chinese

Most adults who speak English as their first language know between 20,000 and 35,000 words. It is believed that if you know the 500 most common Chinese characters, you can read about 75% of modern Chinese. Studies done in China have shown that most Chinese newspapers and magazines use 3,500 basic characters.2

The reason fewer words are needed to get by Chinese relates back to the way the Chinese language is constructed: Basic characters make up new words. As we showed by the example of ‘meralgia parenthetical.  Do you know the meaning of this word? The Chinese word for this contains common, simpler words put together,  A: gǎnjué 感觉 to feel B: yìcháng xìng 异常性 abnormal C: gǔ tòng 股痛 pain in the thigh.

Because fundamental Chinese characters in modern Chinese are used to construct new character combinations and new words, it is easier to be fluent in Chinese. Take for example loanwords, Chinese words originating from other languages. China has gotten international, and more loanwords are used than before. Loanwords are typically constructed from basic Chinese characters and exemplify why the number of most common Chinese characters has reduced and will continue to reduce.

Tàijí quán 太极拳 Shadowboxing is an ancient Chinese slow-moving exercise that can be an ideal way for anyone to stay fit. It is very popular in China and has widely spread worldwide as a part of Chinese Gōngfū 功夫 Kungfu.

What does Tàijí quán 太极拳 mean?

Tàijí quán 太极拳 is based on the Chinese Philosophy of Tàijí 太极. Tài 太 means ‘supreme’, jí 极 means ‘ultimate’. Tàijí 太极 principles are used to describe a balanced, calm, and healthy way of life. The character quán 拳 means “fist,” which makes sense since we only need our hands to do this exercise.

Usually, Tàijí quán 太极拳 is a slow exercise and an internal Chinese martial art practised for defence training, health benefits, and meditation. Tàijí quán 太极拳 has practitioners worldwide. Its popularity worldwide may be because it is good for your health.

There are both traditional and new ways to do Tàijí quán 太极拳. There are many different stories about the origin of Tàijí quán 太极拳. The most well-known is that Zhang Sanfeng, who lived during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), made Tàijí quán 太极拳 after seeing a crane and a snake fight.

When you do Tàijí quán 太极拳, you move slowly and gracefully. Since it doesn’t require any special gear, clothes, shoes etc., it can be done anyplace.

Ultimately, Tàijí quán 太极拳 is a way to exercise the body and the mind through a series of gentle, flowing poses that look like a dance when done together. It is easy to learn, so even a child could be a master at it.

How to do Tàijí quán 太极拳 Shadowboxing?

As we have already pointed out, the goal of doing Tàijí quán 太极拳 is to improve our spiritual and mental health, bringing us closer to balance and improving our lives. This exercise has a meditative side that can help bring calm and happiness to your life. To move, you don’t have to use a lot of force.

The focus in Tàijí quán 太极拳 is on coordinating the body, adjusting your breath, and letting your muscles relax.

Most Tàijí quán 太极拳 practices include a warm-up with simple movements, like shoulder circles, turning the head from side to side, or rocking back and forth. This is done to help you loosen up your muscles and joints and pay attention to your breath and body.

The practice of Tàijí quán 太极拳 includes many different movements. Depending on the style, you have to move more or less.

Qìgōng 气功 Qigong is an important aspect of Tàijí quán 太极拳. Qìgōng 气功 is known as ‘breath work’ or ‘energy work’ and involves slow, gentle breathing, sometimes done with movement. The goal is to quiet the mind and get the energy moving in the body.

Many people today don’t get enough exercise regularly. Tàijí quán 太极拳 can be a great way to get the training you need and help you lead a balanced, calm, and healthy life.

China celebrates various traditional, culturally essential festivals as the largest and one of the most culturally diverse countries worldwide. Many of these fascinating festivals are based on the traditional Lunar calendar and are an integral aspect of Chinese culture. This article will look at 8 Chinese Festivals celebrated in China today.

1 Chūn jié 春节 Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is perhaps the largest and most well-known of all Chinese festivals globally. In Chinese, Chinese New Year is described as Chūn jié 春节, which means Spring Festival.

Chūn jié 春节 celebrates the beginning of the new year on the traditional Chinese Lunar calendar. The festival is a time for families to reunite for a large family dinner while honoring one’s ancestors.

2 Yuánxiāo jié 元宵节 Lantern Festival

On the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, there is a festival called the Lantern Festival. It marks the end of the Spring Festival. The most essential and common traditions are enjoying lanterns, trying to figure out lanterns’ riddles, and eating tangyuan tāng yuán 汤圆 glutinous rice balls dessert soup. It is also common to watch wǔ shī 舞狮 lion dance – a traditional cultural activity.

3 Qīng míng jié 清明节 Qingming Festival – Clear and Bright Festival

This holiday is also called “Tomb Sweeping Day” because it is a time to remember the dead and sǎomù 扫墓 sweep the tombs. Qīng míng jié 清明节 happens every year on the first day of the 5th Chinese solar term on the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar (one of the 24 Chinese solar terms).

During the festival, families usually go to the tombs of their ancestors and make ritual offerings. This is done to honor the traditional respect the Chinese and many other Asian cultures have for their ancestors. China made it a national holiday in 2008.

4 Duān wǔ jié 端午节 Dragon Boat Festival

Duān wǔ jié 端午节 Dragon Boat Festival is another traditional Chinese holiday. During this holiday, Chinese people usually get together with family and friends. They have activities like eating zòng zi 粽子, a traditional rice dish made with glutinous rice, stuffed with different fillings – sweet or salty, wrapped in bamboo leaves, and racing dragon boats.

The Dragon Boat races are based on the story of Qū yuán 屈原, a minister in one of the Warring State governments who was sent away by government officials and killed himself in the Mìluō jiāng 汨罗江 Miluo River.

People who lived in China simultaneously as Qū yuán 屈原 were grateful for his skill and willingness to serve the country. Every year, they threw zòng zi 粽子 rice dumplings into the river, hoping that the fish would eat the rice dumplings instead of Qū yuán’s 屈原 body.

The races have been held for more than 2,500 years and have a long and rich history of ceremonies. People hold dragon boat races every year on the day he died to remember this.

The people tried to save Qū yuán 屈原, who was an honorable man. They searched desperately in their boats for Qūyuán 屈原, but they couldn’t save him. Every year, the Dragon Boat Festival is held to remember this attempt to save Qūyuán 屈原.

5 Guǐ jié 鬼节 the Ghost Festival

Guǐ jié 鬼节 Ghost Festival takes place on the 15th day of the seventh month in the Lunar Calendar. Several Asian countries celebrate the Ghost Festival every year, and the festival is also known as Zhōng yuán jié 中元节 or Yú lán jié 盂兰节 Yulan Festival. The festival has its roots in Buddhism and Taoism.

In some places in China, the 15th of the seventh lunar month is not the only important day. Instead, the whole Ghost Month, the seventh month, is important. People not only pray to the ghosts and worship them but also try not to break taboos to avoid bad luck.

6 Zhōng qiū jié 中秋节 Mid-Autumn Festival

Zhōng qiū jié 中秋节 Mid-Autumn Festival is the most important Chinese festival after Chinese New Year and has a history dating back over 3,000 years to when Chinese emperors worshipped the moon for bountiful harvests. In the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, the festival takes place on the 15th day of the 8th month. This is when the moon is thought to be at its brightest.

During the festival, beautifully colored lanterns of all shapes and sizes can be seen with the symbols of prosperity and good fortune. The festival’s traditional food is yuè bǐng 月饼 mooncakes, a sweet pastry made of red bean paste.

7 Chóngyáng jié 重阳节 Double Ninth Festival

Chóng yáng jié 重阳节, or the Double Ninth Festival, takes place on the ninth day of the ninth month on the Chinese calendar. This day was once thought to have a lot of yáng 阳 positive spirit. Therefore, it was seen as a lucky day.

On this day, many Chinese people like to dēng gāo 登高 to climb mountains, drink jú huā jiǔ 菊花酒 chrysanthemum wine, eat chóng yáng gāo 重阳糕 Chongyang cakes, etc. Some Chinese people also use the day to pay their respects at the graves of family members.

8 Qī xī jié 七夕节 Qixi Festival or Chinese Valentine’s Day

Qī xī jié 七夕节, Chinese Valentine’s Day, is based on a love story about a zhī nǚ 织女 weaver girl and a niú láng 牛郎 cow herder. It is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Some women wear traditional styles of clothes worn by Han Chinese called Hàn fú 汉服 and spend the day preparing gifts of tea, wine, flowers, and fruit to give to the weaver girl from the story so that she will grant them wisdom and help them get what they want.

Qī xī jié 七夕节 is also called shuāng qī 双七 Double Seventh Night because it happens on the seventh lunar month seventh night.

What is the story about zhī nǚ 织女 the weaver girl and niú láng 牛郎 the cow herder about? Niú láng 牛郎 was an orphan, a cow herder who his brother and sister-in-law raised. His sister-in-law did a lot to hurt him. Ultimately, they kicked him out and gave him an old cow as a present.

One day, the old cow suddenly spoke up and told niú láng 牛郎 that a fairy was coming and that she was the heavenly weaver. It said that if the fairy didn’t get back to heaven by morning, she would stay here.

From what the old cow said, niú láng 牛郎 saw the beautiful fairy and fell in love with her, and then they married. The Yù huáng dà dì 玉皇大帝 Emperor of heaven found out, and he was furious, so he sent minions to take the heavenly weaver back to heaven.

Niú láng 牛郎 was sad and decided to try to find them. But the Queen Mother of the West drew a Silver River (the Milky Way) in the sky and stopped him.

Niú láng 牛郎 and the zhī nǚ’s 织女 love moved the magpies, so the magpies built a bridge of magpies over the Silver River so that Niú láng 牛郎 and the zhī nǚ’s 织女 could meet. This sight also moved the Yù huáng dà dì 玉皇大帝 Emperor of Heaven, who permitted the couple to meet on the Magpie Bridge on the seventh day of the Chinese Lunar year’s seventh lunar month. This is where the Qī xī jié 七夕节 got its start.

As the world economy becomes more globalized and China’s market power grows quickly, countries worldwide are slowly starting to pay more attention to China. In recent years, China’s share of the world’s economy and trade has flourished. More countries and business people want to trade with China than ever before.

Since the “Belt and Road” policy was put in place a few years ago, China’s trade with, for example, European countries has become more critical.

Mandarin or Chinese has the most native speakers of any language in the world, so you can probably guess that learning Chinese for business has a lot of benefits. Learning Mandarin Chinese will give you many great opportunities, whether you are an employee, a business owner, or just planning your career.

Interestingly, Mandarin Chinese is becoming a more important language around the world. It replaces English in business communication because China is now home to many top companies.

This article explores some reasons to learn Chinese, opportunities to be gained by studying Chinese and highlights eight main benefits of learning Chinese for business.

1 AS THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING CHINA, THE CHINESE LANGUAGE IS PROMINENTLY ESSENTIAL

As the key to understanding China, the Chinese language is prominently essential. The Chinese language has a long history, and the Chinese language is also one of the most spoken languages in the world. The Chinese language is also an important language for business and trade. Many international companies use the Chinese language to communicate with their customers and partners in China.

Because trade has grown, having Chinese skills and being able to speak Chinese has become an essential part of many people’s career growth in the international business world. The Chinese language is used in China. It is also understood in countries like Singapore and Malaysia, both in South Asia. More than 1.2 billion people speak Mandarin as their mother language, and you need to know the language if you want your business to do well.

More and more people who work in international trade want to learn Chinese. And as a learner of Chinese, you might like to learn Business Chinese because it is a subset of the Chinese language. If you want your business to grow in places where people speak Chinese, you can’t expect everyone to know your language. It’s up to you to put in the work by learning the language.

2 BUSINESS CHINESE STRENGTHENS WORKING AND SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS

Business Chinese strengthens working and social relationships by providing a common language for businesses to communicate. By learning Business Chinese, you will develop a better understanding of the Chinese business culture and build strong relationships with your Chinese counterparts. In addition, Business Chinese can help you negotiate better deals and terms with your Chinese suppliers and customers.

For people working in China, your Chinese coworkers or workers in Chinese firms are essential people to talk to in an environment where Chinese is spoken. You might have a lot of work-related or professional words used in everyday work talk or go through intense business negotiations.

If all of you know how to talk about simple things and do not learn to speak basic Chinese, it will be hard to get along with these people in different work situations. Communication is one of the essential parts of working as a team or with Chinese companies. The most important things to ask yourself are, “What does it mean if you do not understand what your coworker says?” “Will a lacking understanding of Chinese culture and language result in a loss in potential business opportunities?” These are essential questions whether you are in Shanghai, Beijing, or tier 3 and tier 4 cities in China.

If you want to do business with Chinese people, partners, contractors, and customers, you need to be able to speak Mandarin Chinese. Even if they speak perfect English or a foreign language, you both know that knowing their mother tongue will help you build trust and a more personal connection. If you don’t have any Chinese business partners, learning Chinese will help you make more connections, which will increase your chances of doing well in business.

China has about 1.4 billion people living there. Many people all over the world speak Chinese. This means that there are thousands of opportunities to do business with experts in many fields. Learning Chinese will give you more options for business partners, contractors, consultants, and customers if you want to do business.

3 LEARNING CHINESE WILL HELP YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF CHINESE BUSINESS CULTURE AND ETIQUETTE

If you’re doing business in China or with Chinese companies, learning Mandarin Chinese will help you to understand Chinese business culture and etiquette. For those of you who have already learned about the Chinese language and culture, you probably know that the Chinese language is full of idioms and expressions that can be difficult to understand for those who don’t speak the language. Thus, Mandarin communication will give you a significant advantage in negotiations and other business dealings.

If you work in China or with a Chinese business partner or Chinese clients, learning about Chinese culture and manners will help you. You will be able to reach this goal if you learn Business Chinese.

Business etiquette always has different improvements and fusions in different cultures. For instance, your native Chinese colleague or trading partner will find it strange and embarrassing when you try to greet them with a kiss on the cheek. Chinese people prefer shaking hands confidently and smiling to express their friendliness.
It can be hard to do business with people from other countries. Business etiquette, in particular, can be very different from one culture to the next. This can lead to misunderstandings, embarrassment, and even failed business deals in the worst case.

The way Chinese business people act is very complicated, and it is essential to do your homework and learn how to do things correctly. For example, it’s vital to be careful when giving gifts since many officials see gifts as bribes. In a conversation, it’s best to avoid direct negative answers like “no.” Instead, it’s often better to say something less natural, like “I will need more time to think about it.”

When you learn Mandarin Chinese for business, you will learn these customs and better understand Chinese business etiquette. This will make you more polite and help you explain your ideas better. In the same way, you’ll learn and better understand business and legal terms from China. Speaking mandarin can better understand what’s going on in the Chinese business world and the Chinese economy. You won’t miss out on essential details or nuances in translation when communicating with Chinese speakers.

Learning business Chinese will also help you increase your knowledge about how Chinese businesses and customers work and think. You’ll know what makes them tick and what gets them going. You’ll learn how to talk to them better and build business relationships that last when you learn Mandarin. Understanding the Chinese language will also help you get to know people better, which is helpful because Chinese people like to do business with people they trust.

4 BEING ABLE TO USE CHINESE WILL HELP COMPANIES GROW AND MAKE MORE MONEY

Being able to use Chinese will help companies grow and make more money. This is because China is a rapidly growing economy, and being able to communicate with Chinese businesses and consumers will give companies a competitive edge. Additionally, China is a huge market for many products and services, so tapping into that market can lead to increased profits.

If you can speak Mandarin Chinese well enough to get by, you will have more business and networking opportunities and ultimately expand your business. It’s easier to learn Chinese than you might think. Even if you say basic phrases to Chinese partners in their native tongue, they will appreciate your efforts to “be more Chinese”.

The Chinese appreciate your efforts and the little extra you have done to improve communication. In addition, Learning Chinese will also eliminate the need for translators, saving money for businesses and reducing error probability and mistakes during translation sessions. Since these skills are rare, you can expect your career prospects to improve in return.

China has one of the fastest-growing economies and one of the biggest markets in the world. Adding Chinese markets to your business can be very profitable. But for this expansion to work, you need to be able to speak Chinese and talk to business partners in their language.

As was said above, if you want to build a business in China that does well, you should know about Chinese business culture and etiquette. In the same way, it’s essential to build strong personal and professional relationships. Growing your business in China could make you a lot of money if you do this.

As we already pointed out, learning Chinese for business can help you make more money by lowering your business costs. You will be less dependent on translators and save money on translation costs.

5 CHINESE SKILLS WILL IMPROVE COMMERCIAL NEGOTIATION TECHNIQUES

The ability to speak the Chinese language will undoubtedly improve commercial negotiation techniques. This is because Chinese is the language of business in many parts of the world, and being able to communicate effectively in this language will give negotiators a significant advantage. Furthermore, understanding Chinese culture and customs will also be beneficial in negotiations, as this can help build rapport and trust with counterparts.

If you are in China for business, it will be helpful if you can speak their language. This shows respect, gets around awkward language barriers, and keeps you from having to use a translator all the time. When doing business with the Chinese, trust is crucial. Meetings and social events are always set up ahead of time for Chinese people before they talk about business.

Trust needs to be based on something real. You will understand how Chinese people think when learning the Chinese language well enough to use it in business. This will help you gain their confidence and have better conversations with possible clients.

6 LEARNING CHINESE GIVES YOU AN EDGE OVER OTHER PEOPLE AND MAKES IT MORE LIKELY THAT YOU WILL GET A RAISE OR A PROMOTION

Learning Chinese gives you an edge over other people and makes it more likely that you will get a raise or a promotion. With the ever-increasing globalization, being able to speak Chinese gives you a clear advantage in the job market. Many companies are now doing business with China, and communicating effectively can help you stand out from the competition.

If you can speak the Chinese language fluently, it will also be easier to do business and grow in some of the world’s most important cities like Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, and Taipei.

Which employee do you want to be the first to start your business in China? Who is smarter: the person who doesn’t know Chinese or speaks Chinese well and knows Chinese culture? Learning Chinese has never been more critical.

Most job, product, and service markets are already full, so it’s crucial to stand out. Even though more people are learning Chinese, there are still fewer people who speak Chinese as a second language than English or Arabic.

So, if you want to grow your business in China and want it to be successful, you should know that if you can speak the Chinese business language well, you will stand out from most other employees. As a business owner, you will be able to use China’s economy as a powerhouse to your advantage. You’ll also be able to make better connections with possible partners and offer your customers new opportunities.

If you want to be more competitive in business worldwide, you should learn Chinese.

7 CHINESE SKILLS WILL MAKE YOUR BUSINESS IDEA CLEARER

If you have a business idea that you want to make more transparent, learning Chinese can help. The language has a lot of idioms and expressions that can help explain concepts more clearly. In addition, the written Chinese characters are exact and concise, so they can help communicate your ideas more effectively.

One of the most important reasons for business people to learn Mandarin is to be able to talk about and present their ideas. They will do their best to explain the point of their presentation about a business idea, define a business strategy with specific numbers and indices, or analyze all the signs in Chinese.

And again, when you are presenting your business idea before the decision-makers in a Chinese company, it is crucial to communicate directly with them and not through the “English translator” in that company.

During a short presentation, there will be limited time, and you want to convince the decision-makers in the Chinese companies. While the Chinese might have English speakers, these are not necessarily the decision-makers in the company. Using Chinese can be a vital tool to communicate better or as an “ice-breaker” that will enable you to get more business opportunities and collaboration with your target company in China.

8 CHINESE SKILLS WILL HELP YOU GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BUSINESS CLIMATE IN CHINA AND NEW IDEAS

If you want to do business in China and Chinese communities, it’s essential to have at least some basic Chinese skills. This will help you better understand the business climate in China and new ideas. Even if you’re not planning on doing business in China, learning Chinese can still be beneficial. It can help you understand Chinese culture and history better, and it can also be a valuable skill to have in general.

China is also the fastest-growing consumer market, so communicating with and understanding how Chinese consumers act is a huge plus.

It’s important to remember that business is done differently in different countries. Many ways of doing business in other countries are not necessarily better or worse than how you do business. They are just different.

If you learn Chinese for business, you will learn more about how the Chinese economy works and how Chinese people do business. Some ways to run a business may seem strange but can be surprisingly profitable.

They can also help you develop new ideas by showing how other cultures and markets do things well.

China is one of the countries whose economy is growing the fastest. Many new technologies, trends, skills, and ways of doing business are used. Understanding the Chinese economy and business trends will also teach you how business is done worldwide.

The Chinese expression qǐlai 起来 has both literal and figurative applications.

Qǐlai 起来 are used in three ways in Chinese.

DESCRIBING AN UPWARD MOVEMENT

Firstly, you can use Verb + qǐlai 起来 to express upward movement. For example, jiǎn qǐlai 捡起来 to pick up or zhàn qǐlai 站起来 to stand up.

To ask someone to stand up, you can say Nǐ zhàn qǐlái 你站起来.

In terms of what it means at its most basic level, you can use qǐlai 起来 in the sense of lifting or moving something up. The grammatical structure is 把 + object + verb + qǐlai 起来. This phrase emphasizes the strong move up.

Examples:

苹果都掉到地上了,快捡起来!
Píngguǒ dōu diào dào dìshàngle, kuài jiǎn qǐlái!
The apples have fallen to the ground. Hurry, pick them up!

不要动,把手举起来!
Bùyào dòng, bǎshǒu jǔ qǐlái!
Don’t move. Put your hands up!

USING QǏLAI 起来 TO SHOW THAT SOMETHING HAS STARTED OR IS GOING ON

By using verb + qǐlai 起来 you can also show that something has started and is still going on. In these situations, qǐlai 起来 is only used with spontaneous actions, like chàng 唱 to sing, tiào 跳 to jump, liáo 聊 to chat, or with states like rè 热 hot, lěng 冷 cold, or hǎo 好 good etc.

Verb + qǐlai 起来 cannot be used with planned actions.

For example, this example is right:

夏天到了,天气慢慢热起来了

Xiàtiān dàole, tiānqì màn man rè qǐláile

Summer is here, and the weather is getting warmer.
Let’s say you want to ask when a person is starting class, and then you ask. This example is wrong because the action was planned:

你几点上课起来?
Nǐ jǐ diǎn shàngkè qǐlái?

Having a class is planned action, so we can not use qǐlai 起来. We ought to say:

你几点开始上课?
Nǐ jǐ diǎn kāishǐ shàngkè?
What time do you start class?

USING QǏLAI 起来 TO EXPRESS JUDGEMENT

Another way to use qǐlai 起来 is to describe the feeling of something you look at, listen to, feel, etc.

When used to make an initial assessment, qǐlai 起来 express that the speaker has just taken action and, based on that, has made a quick judgment.

The is a typical sentence structure when you use qǐlai 起来:

Subject + Verb + qǐlai 起来 + Adverb + Adjective

This structure is often used in Chinese with perception verbs like chī 吃 to eat, kàn 看 to see, tīng 听 to listen etc.

Example:

这个人看起来很友善。
Zhège rén kàn qǐlái hěn yǒushàn.
This person looks friendly.
